Does Natural Hair Shine?

Soft and silky hair is largely influenced by genetics, but lustre depends on many other factors beyond hereditary traits. Lifestyle, diet, climate, geographic location, and even hair colour can play a role.

Hair structure also affects shine – straight hair tends to reflect light more evenly than wavy or curly hair, making it appear shinier. Typically, fine, mid-length hair is more commonly associated with natural shine.

Interestingly, some regions of the world are known for their residents having particularly healthy and shiny hair. Countries like Sweden, Spain, Japan, and India are often noted for this, along with France and certain regions of Russia, where hair is exceptionally beautiful.

These examples prove that shiny hair isn’t determined solely by genetics – factors like region, climate, national cuisine, lifestyle, and hair care traditions also play a role, passed down through generations.

But what about Latvia? Do we have our own hair care traditions?

Hair specialist Eva Stāmere believes there are only a few: “We focus more on skin than on hair. It’s true that the new generation pays a lot of attention to beauty, including hair care, but we are still taking baby steps.”

Still, the specialist is confident that, with time, Latvian hair will become healthier – and shinier.

Every individual has a unique level of hair lustre – some have naturally visible shine, while others experience less reflection, often influenced by the environment.

In Latvia, where the weather changes rapidly, hair tends to be less shiny. Therefore, maintaining healthy hair requires external support, including proper nutrition, vitamins, and well-planned hair care routines.

Artificially Created Lustre

One of the most common false sources of shiny hair – often creating a deceptive impression – Is hair colour.

Modern hair dyes have advanced significantly, not only providing beautiful shades but also enhancing shine. Dyed hair can appear up to three times shinier than natural hair, making uncoloured hair seem matte, lifeless, and lacking lustre by comparison.

Additionally, the contrast between regrown roots and the rest of the coloured hair can further emphasize a matte effect, reinforcing the illusion of reduced shine in natural hair.

Hair specialist Eva Stāmere emphasizes the importance of healthy hair, as it directly contributes to natural shine in the long run. She recommends toning rather than full colouring, especially for hair that has already been dyed.

“Toning colours are gentler. Besides, today there are toning hair colours that also tone grey hair,” she explains.

She highlights L’Oréal Professionnel Dia Colour and Davines toning colours as excellent options, as they provide beautiful tones while maintaining a natural shine.

Eva advises: “If you truly want your hair to shine, do read about the hair colour before choosing to dye it, because some colours make hair shinier than others. And remember – unfortunately, the lustre washes out from hair colour. This often leads to frequent colouring, so it’s crucial to choose a high-quality hair dye.”

How to Boost Hair Lustre?

Hair specialist Eva Stāmere reassures that shiny hair is no myth – it is real and absolutely achievable with the right care. However, it’s important to remember that lustre is sensitive and fragile, influenced by various internal and external factors.

To maintain healthy, radiant hair, it’s essential to adopt a comprehensive hair care approach that addresses nourishment, protection, and hydration.

Hair specialist Eva Stāmere highlights several ways to enhance hair shine naturally.

“We can help our hair by eating fish, such as salmon and sardines, as well as avocados and other foods that improve hair health and lustre. Additionally, vitamins E, C, and Omega-3 are beneficial,” she explains.

Natural hair masks can also support lustre, with options like aloe vera (aged at least six years) and flaxseed concoctions.

Hair condition and shine are influenced by external factors, as lustre does not tolerate excessive sun exposure, cold wind, hot water, or heated styling tools. To maintain its glow, thermal protection against heat and UV rays is essential.

“Spring is here – we should spray thermal protection against UV on our hair,” reminds the hair expert.

She further advises: “Remember that the first sun can burn hair, so always cover it with a hat or scarf – whether you’re going for a hike, working in the garden, or sunbathing.”
